What Is The Cheapest Roofing Materials?

What Is the Cheapest Roofing Material?

While roofing is not the most exciting part of home construction or renovation, it’s one of the most important. After all, a sturdy roof is what stands between you and the elements. A good roof is also crucial for home insulation as they can keep your house warm during winters and cool during summers. Without a good materials, your home is susceptible to leaks and other types of damage that may affect its structural integrity.

Since choosing materials types is not a small feat, homeowners on a budget might want to consider using the cheapest  materials available. However, affordability doesn’t mean these materials are of low quality. More often than not, hiring the right roofing contractor can make even the cheapest materials last for a long time.

For those looking into their options, here are four of the most affordable roofing types that will work for any home:

Asphalt

Asphalt shingle is the most affordable among the cheapest material type available. Not only is it popular, but asphalt can also retail for as low as $1 per square foot of shingle. While it may be vulnerable during winters, there are rolled asphalt roofs that can withstand ice and high winds. You can also choose between organic and inorganic shingles.

Be cautious when it comes to durability. Even if cost is important to you, never choose the cheapest asphalt shingles. It's a good idea to look for shingles that have a decent hail rating and are durable.

Durable and impact-resistant asphalt shingles can last from 15 to 30 years, especially if they have a higher hail rating. Of course, their longevity also depends on how regularly you maintain your roof or replace worn-out shingles.

There are two forms of asphalt shingles, architectural and 3-tab.. Most architectural shingles have a 30-year or limited lifetime warranty. They're thicker than 3-tab. The average lifespan of standard 3-tab shingles is between 20 and 30 years.

Metal

In terms of affordability metal come in second to asphalt. Metal materials can cost from around $1.80 to $6 per square foot depending on the type of metal used. Galvanized steel is one of the most popular metal roof materials today. These are often used in hurricane-prone areas. Other types of metal roof materials available are lead, zinc, and copper.

Easy to install and maintain, metal roofs can last from 30 to 50 years. They’re also a great choice for insulation, and metal materials with a Class A fire rating can heighten the safety in your home.

Wood

The third most affordable roofing type are wooden shingles. Wood shingle is made mostly from red cedar, wooden roofs can cost from $70 to $100 per square foot depending on the style and manufacturer of the shingle. Red cedar is the typical choice since this type of wood is resistant to extreme weather, insects, and decay.

Clay

Last but not least, clay roofing materials are the least affordable among these four options. Clay roofs can cost from $150 to $400 per square foot. However, this exorbitant cost is due to several factors, including:

  • Its stunning appearance once installed
  • Resistance to fire, mold, decay, insects, hail, and high winds
  • Longevity
  • Overall low maintenance
  • Provides natural airflow and efficient heat transfers

Additionally, the broken and damaged pieces of clay roofs can be easily replaced without disrupting the entire roof system. They also come in a variety of color.

Quality Roofs for Less

Selecting the cheapest roof material doesn’t automatically mean you’ll get a less durable option. Each roofing material has its own pros and cons, and the choice will depend entirely on your needs and budget. While asphalt is the most affordable roofing type, it can last for as long as 30 years if maintained well. Similarly, choosing a reliable roofing project contractor for installation will also help lengthen the lifespan of any roof you choose.
